The Spanish National Police have issued a public warning regarding a prevalent roadside scam, colloquially known as the "cat scam" or "jack scam." The authorities highlight a deceptive tactic where individuals posing as mechanics approach unsuspecting drivers, falsely claiming their vehicle exhibits unusual noises or is unsafe to operate. These fraudsters then offer immediate assistance, utilizing a car jack to simulate a repair, only to demand exorbitant fees, typically ranging from 600 to 800 euros, for a service that is either unnecessary or never performed. A spokesperson for the National Police emphasized the importance of vigilance, advising citizens to exercise caution and refrain from accepting unsolicited help from strangers who request money for roadside assistance. This warning aims to educate the public on how to identify and avoid falling victim to such fraudulent schemes, reinforcing the message that genuine assistance should always come from trusted and verifiable sources.
