VAMA, SATU MARE - In the heart of Țara Oașului, Istvánfi Géza stands as a living testament to a centuries-old craft, proudly carrying the title of the region's last active potter. Continuing a legacy passed down from his father and grandfather, Géza represents the third generation dedicated to the art of pottery. "It's a great joy," says Istvánfi Géza, his hands deftly shaping clay on the spinning wheel. "I learned from my father, partially from my grandfather. This is the third generation." He corrects those who call him the 'last potter,' noting that his daughter is also continuing the tradition, ensuring its future. Géza's workshop and the local village museum have become popular destinations for tourists eager to witness and participate in this ancient art. "We have many tourists who visit us, even at my workshop and the village museum," he explains. He recounted a recent visit from a family from Bucharest: "They asked the hotel owner what else they could visit, and he directed them to me. They were very happy. I even let the two children try their hand at the wheel." He emphasizes the ease with which anyone can learn, requiring only "time, patience, a lot of it, that's all." His collection includes pieces dating back to the 1800s, crafted by potters from his own locality. While many potters left the region after 1989, Géza remains, a dedicated guardian of Țara Oașului's rich ceramic heritage. His efforts ensure that the intricate designs and functional beauty of traditional Oaș pottery continue to inspire and educate new generations.
