Vitebsk Intersection Redesign Improves Traffic Safety
Vitebsk Intersection Redesign Aims to Reduce Accidents A recent redesign of a busy intersection in Vitebsk, Belarus, is showing promising results in reducing traffic accidents. The changes, implemented at the intersection of Moskovsky Prospekt and Sarabobinichsky Trakt, include the addition of a dedicated left-turn lane with its own traffic signal. Before the changes, drivers turning left often experienced conflicts with oncoming traffic. "Previously, there was a lot of conflicting movement," explains Dmitry, a local driving instructor who filmed the changes and posted a video online. "Now, with the new section, drivers turning left have priority when the green light is on." Dmitry's dashcam footage shows a clear improvement in traffic flow and safety. The video also includes footage of a previous accident at the intersection, highlighting the problem before the changes were implemented. While the changes are intended to reduce accidents, Dmitry cautions that it is not a complete solution, and drivers must remain vigilant. The Vitebsk city council hopes that this project will serve as a model for other intersections in the city, improving traffic safety and reducing congestion.
