BUDVA, MONTENEGRO – A peculiar trend has emerged on Slovenska Plaža in Budva, where beachgoers are reportedly reserving prime spots using only towels and stones. This practice, observed on June 22, 2025, has drawn attention for its unconventional nature. The video, filmed by local observer Aleksandar Raonić, showcases several unoccupied areas on the popular pebble beach, marked by neatly laid-out towels weighted down with stones. Raonić expressed surprise at the sight, noting that such a method of 'reservation' is new to the Montenegrin coast. This informal system contrasts sharply with beach regulations in other Mediterranean destinations. In Croatia, communal services are known to confiscate items left unattended to reserve spots, treating them as 'smuggled goods.' Spain imposes fines, reportedly up to 150 euros, for similar violations. Greece and Italy generally show more tolerance, but interventions occur if the practice becomes excessive. The phenomenon in Budva raises questions about beach access and fairness, especially during peak tourist season. While some might view it as a clever way to secure a preferred spot, others argue it limits public access and creates an uneven playing field for spontaneous beach visitors. As summer progresses, it remains to be seen how local authorities and beachgoers will address this growing trend.
