Philippines Tackles Energy Insecurity in Visayas and Mindanao: Experts Propose Solutions
The Philippines' Visayas and Mindanao regions face a critical energy security challenge, hindering economic growth. A recent BrandRap video featuring energy experts highlights the vulnerability of the current power infrastructure. "Siargao's two-week blackout in December 2024 demonstrated the risks of a single-line power system," stated Prof. Rowaldo del Mundo, Associate Dean, College of Engineering, University of the Philippines. Experts advocate for creating redundant power lines and maximizing renewable energy sources, particularly rooftop solar, which is becoming increasingly affordable. Atty. Monalisa Dimalanta, Chairperson of the Energy Regulatory Commission, suggested incentivizing the adoption of rooftop solar among businesses in Siargao, given the high concentration of hotels and tourist accommodations. Asec. Romeo Montenegro, Deputy Executive Director of the Mindanao Development Authority, emphasized the viability of hybrid systems integrating solar and battery power with diesel generators to reduce reliance on diesel. These strategies offer a path towards sustainable energy solutions for the region, ensuring economic growth and resilience.
