San Luis Potosí to Elect Judges in Unprecedented Popular Vote

San Luis Potosí Makes History: Citizens to Elect Judges for the First Time San Luis Potosí, Mexico is poised to make history on June 1st, 2025, as it holds its first-ever popular election for judges and magistrates. This unprecedented event marks a significant step in the state's judicial reform, transitioning from a system where judges were appointed by the legislature and executive branch to one where citizens directly participate in the selection process. The election will determine the fate of 87 judicial positions, including 69 judges in the first instance, 15 magistrates from the Supreme Court of Justice, and 3 magistrates from the Judicial Disciplinary Tribunal. The campaign period, which concluded on May 28th, saw the State Electoral and Citizen Participation Council (CEPAC) intensify its informative campaign across social media and traditional media outlets. "This election is a landmark event," says Ulises Santoyo, a journalist covering the election for Redacción San Luis. "It's a testament to the state's commitment to transparency and citizen engagement in the judicial system." Santoyo highlights the challenges CEPAC faced in organizing the election, from printing ballots to training electoral officials. The success of this election will depend heavily on citizen participation. The hope is that this innovative approach to judicial selection will set a national precedent and strengthen the public's trust in the judicial process. The outcome of this election will undoubtedly shape the future of the judiciary in San Luis Potosí and potentially influence other states across Mexico.
