La Paz, Bolivia – A concerning trend of fuel reselling has emerged in Bolivia, with reports indicating that some drivers are siphoning gasoline from their vehicles after purchasing it at regulated prices and then offering it for sale at significantly inflated rates on social media platforms. According to citizen complaints shared via the 'Ojo Ciudadano' initiative, gasoline is being resold for up to 20 Bolivian bolivianos per liter, a stark contrast to the official prices. Screenshots from Facebook Marketplace, presented in the report, show various listings for gasoline, with prices ranging from 8 to 20 Bolivian bolivianos. One audio recording captured a seller confirming a price of 8 Bolivian bolivianos per liter, while another message exchange indicated a price of 20 Bolivian bolivianos per liter. This practice is reportedly taking advantage of long queues at gas stations, where drivers fill their tanks only to later extract and resell the fuel. The public has voiced strong concerns over the lack of oversight and is demanding that the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) implement immediate and effective controls to curb this burgeoning parallel market for fuel.
