La Paz, Bolivia – A recent report from Red Uno has brought to light a critical discussion regarding the daily cost of food in Bolivia, referencing data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and an analysis by the Jubilee Foundation.According to the INE, an individual in Bolivia requires 15 Bolivianos per day to cover their basic food needs, which translates to 468 Bolivianos per month for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, the Jubilee Foundation has presented a contrasting perspective, asserting that these figures are significantly outdated and do not reflect the current economic realities, particularly in the face of ongoing inflation. An expert from the Jubilee Foundation stated, 'The National Institute of Statistics tells us that you need 468 Bolivianos to buy a basic food basket. But if you divide this by 30 days a week, three times a day, it comes out to about 5 Bolivianos per meal. With 5 Bolivianos per meal, one does not live.'The Foundation’s analysis indicates that for an average household of four people, the estimated monthly food expenditure would be around 1,900 Bolivianos, a figure that falls below the national minimum wage. This disparity, experts warn, is pushing more people into extreme poverty, where they struggle to afford even the most basic food items.'Therefore, it is necessary to update the issue of inflation,' the expert emphasized. 'Updated to the issue of inflation, it turns out that there are more people falling into this level of poverty, extreme poverty, where they cannot even buy a basic food basket.'The report underscores the urgent need for government agencies to revise and update the official cost of living and poverty thresholds to accurately reflect the financial challenges faced by Bolivian citizens.
