COCHABAMBA, Bolivia – On June 20, 2025, over 70 folkloric fraternities gathered in Cochabamba for the "First Promise" to the Virgin of Urkupiña, marking the unofficial start of one of Bolivia's most revered religious and cultural festivals. The event saw hundreds of dancers, adorned in vibrant traditional attire, fill the streets with their energetic performances.
Participants from various dance styles, including Tinkus, Morenadas, Caporales, and Kullawadas, showcased their elaborate choreographies. Many expressed deep devotion to the Virgin of Urkupiña, offering prayers and making promises.
"We are participating in the first promise, and everyone is eager to dance with faith in the Virgin," stated one dancer. Another participant added, "We ask for health, work, and for the situation in Bolivia to improve."
This "First Promise" serves as a crucial general rehearsal for the main folkloric entry, a grand procession, which is scheduled to take place on August 9th. The event highlights the rich cultural heritage and profound religious faith of the Cochabamba community, drawing large crowds and fostering a spirit of unity and celebration.
