Santa Cruz, Bolivia – In response to the ongoing cold snap, the municipal shelter in Santa Cruz has officially opened its doors, providing essential support to individuals experiencing homelessness. The shelter, located at the former bus terminal, began operations on Thursday night, offering a safe haven from the low temperatures. On its inaugural night, the facility welcomed 39 individuals, providing them with medical evaluations, warm showers, clean clothing, dinner, and breakfast. The shelter has a capacity to accommodate up to 150 people. Dr. Isabel Fernandez, Secretary of Municipal Human Development, confirmed the program's details, stating, "The program is planned for 50 days, expected to run until the first week of August." She added that individuals can enter the shelter starting at 6 PM and are expected to depart by 7:00 or 7:30 AM after breakfast. Dr. Fernandez also clarified that there are restrictions for entry, noting, "They cannot arrive under the effects of alcohol or any narcotic; if they arrive like that, they cannot enter. Only those who are simply in a street situation can enter." The municipality has established a toll-free hotline, 800-125-700, for citizens to report individuals in need of shelter. This initiative aims to protect the lives and health of vulnerable populations during the cold weather.
