Bolivia Welcomes Andean-Amazonian New Year 5533 with Ancestral Rituals Bolivia's indigenous communities are celebrating the Andean-Amazonian New Year 5533, a significant date marked by ancient traditions and spiritual ceremonies across the high plains and lowlands. The festivities, which commenced on June 21st, are centered around welcoming the "Lucero del Alba" (Morning Star) with offerings, music, and ancestral fires. Jhony Paco, a Yatiri (spiritual guide), explained the preparations for the new year. "We prepare offerings on these tables, waiting for the sun's rays to give us energy, health, and work for the entire year," Paco stated. He added that the reading of coca leaves and observations of celestial bodies are crucial in determining the year's prospects. "We prepare a table, the offerings, as each one customizes. We wait for the sun to rise, we wait for those rays of sun to give us energy, and to give us health, work, for all that future in this year," Paco elaborated. María Coaquira, a merchant specializing in ceremonial items, highlighted the importance of the offerings. "This offering table must be presented before the sun rises. It is for abundance, for prosperity, for the home, for everything, for family unity, for this crisis we are going through, so that things go well for us. One must make wishes," Coaquira explained, noting that the rituals are believed to bring positive outcomes if performed with sincerity. In addition to the spiritual ceremonies, a productive and artisanal fair is being held, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Guarani community. Artisans are offering a variety of handcrafted goods, including woven textiles and jewelry. One vendor proudly presented a unique citrus-based liquor, explaining, "This liquor is made from citrus juices, it contains grapefruit, orange, tangerine, lemon. It has six months of maceration." The fair invites all residents to experience and support the vibrant indigenous culture.
