La Paz, Bolivia – The parallel dollar exchange rate in Bolivia has experienced significant fluctuations throughout 2025, reaching a historic peak in May before a recent decline. According to a report by Red Uno, the year began with the parallel dollar trading at approximately 14.90 Bolivianos in January. This figure, while already surpassing the official rate, did not initially cause widespread alarm. The rate saw a slight increase to 15.50 Bolivianos in February, followed by a more significant climb to 16.20 Bolivianos in March. By April, the parallel dollar had reached 17.30 Bolivianos, prompting analysts to voice concerns about the escalating trend. The most critical point occurred on May 15th, when the parallel dollar soared to 20 Bolivianos, its highest historical value, triggering alarms across the nation and causing fear among citizens seeking to preserve their savings. However, June brought a notable reversal, with the dollar descending to an average of 15.80 Bolivianos. This downward trend continued into July, with the rate reaching 14.69 Bolivianos by the first of the month on platforms like Binance, marking its lowest point so far this year. Despite this apparent relief, experts warn that the underlying structural conditions contributing to the dollar scarcity remain intact. The limited access to dollars and rising prices suggest that the current reprieve may be temporary, and a new surge in the parallel rate could be observed in the coming months.
