SANTA CRUZ, BOLIVIA – The department of Santa Cruz is facing a severe environmental emergency, with 167 heat spots identified in the past week, many of which have escalated into uncontrolled fires. According to Eder Santibáñez of Defensa del Valle Tucabaca, areas like Roboré and Naranjo have been particularly affected by these blazes. "In the last week, we have registered 167 heat spots with a high probability of fire, and in some locations, we have already confirmed the presence of fire," stated Santibáñez. He emphasized that these fires are often a result of uncontrolled burns that have gotten out of hand, exacerbated by the prevailing lack of rain and high temperatures in the region. Santibáñez also highlighted the existence of Decree 5225, an environmental pause enacted on September 11 of last year, which explicitly prohibits burning and suspends any previously authorized burns. Despite this decree, the fires continue to spread, posing a significant threat to the environment and local communities. The situation underscores the urgent need for effective measures to control and prevent further environmental damage.
