Flooding Closes Road to Romanian Village, Authorities Respond
Flooding in Șona, Romania: Road Closure and Ongoing Efforts Șona, a village near Făgăraș, Romania, is facing disruption after heavy rainfall caused the Olt River to flood, closing the road connecting it to Făgăraș. The road closure began Thursday evening, May 29th, 2025. Emil Morar, mayor of the Mândra commune (which includes Șona), spoke about the situation. "The Olt River's water level is still very high," he stated, "and we've had to close the road to ensure public safety." While smaller streams in the area have stabilized, the mayor confirmed that the high water level of the Olt River remains a concern. Authorities are working to find alternative routes to supply the village and minimize disruption to the residents. Although some houses are at risk near the river, the mayor assures that the majority of homes are safe. Efforts are underway to reopen the road as soon as the water levels subside, and alternative transport using tractors is being considered to ensure the village is not cut off from supplies.
