Corinthians President Indicted in Major Embezzlement Scandal
Corinthians President Indicted in Embezzlement Scandal São Paulo, Brazil – In a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the contract between Brazilian football club Corinthians and the betting company VaideBet, the São Paulo Civil Police have indicted club president Augusto Melo. The indictment, detailed in a 116-page report, charges Melo with criminal association, money laundering, and qualified theft. The investigation uncovered the embezzlement of 1.4 million reais from a sponsorship deal. The police report names three other individuals alongside Melo in the indictment. Alex Fernando Andre, Alex Cassundé (who worked on Melo’s campaign), Marcelo Mariano dos Santos, and Sergio Lara Muzel de Moura are also implicated. According to the report, "the quartet acted in a coordinated manner, perpetrating a series of crimes." The money allegedly passed through shell companies before reaching an account linked to Antônio Vinicius Gritzbach, who was murdered months before the indictment. The investigation also uncovered ties between Gritzbach and the First Capital Command (PCC), a powerful Brazilian drug trafficking organization. "The embezzlement occurred through the payment of one of the installments of the sponsorship contract with VaideBet," said a police spokesperson. "This commission was not stipulated in the contract." The investigation relied heavily on bank secrecy breaches to trace the flow of funds. Augusto Melo, who is expected to face an impeachment vote next week, maintains his innocence and has stated that he will not resign. The case underscores the challenges of combating corruption and financial crimes in professional sports. The investigation continues, and further developments are expected.
