Unsanitary Conditions and Exploitation Uncovered in Rio's Clandestine Pastry Factory Raid
Rio de Janeiro authorities shut down a clandestine Arab pastry factory in the Andaraí neighborhood on June 4, 2025. The operation uncovered unsanitary conditions and eight Syrian workers in precarious situations. The factory supplied various food stalls across the city, including in Tijuca, Barra, Copacabana, and Leblon. "The situation was truly appalling," stated a spokesperson from the Consumer Protection Agency, describing the conditions inside the factory. The raid was a joint effort by the Civil Police and health inspectors. All pastries were seized, and the eight Syrian workers were brought to the police station for questioning. This incident highlights the importance of food safety regulations and the need to protect vulnerable workers.
