Morocco Supermarket Shock: Are Everyday Essentials More Expensive Than You Think?

A recent video by travel vloggers Pablo and Alazne, known as "seaside.nomads," has shed light on the surprising reality of supermarket prices in Morocco. While the North African country is often perceived as a budget-friendly destination, the couple's findings suggest a more nuanced picture, particularly for those planning extended stays or seeking familiar international products. In their video, Pablo and Alazne conducted a price comparison of several common household items and food products found in a Moroccan supermarket against their typical costs in Spain. They highlighted significant price discrepancies for certain goods. For instance, a large bottle of olive oil was priced at approximately €40, and a basic Pantene shampoo cost around €4.70. Diapers were noted at €17 per pack, and a small bag of grated cheese was €3. "We thought olive oil was expensive in Spain, but here it's 40 euros for a large bottle!" exclaimed Pablo in the video, expressing his surprise. He also noted that a common brand of almond milk, which he buys regularly, costs €3, similar to its price in Spain. The vloggers emphasized that while local produce like fruits and vegetables remain significantly cheaper when purchased from local markets, international brands and certain packaged goods in larger supermarkets catering to tourists and wealthier locals can be unexpectedly pricey. "It's clear that most of these are international products," Pablo observed, "but even so, with a Moroccan salary, I see it as complicated to pay these prices." Their findings suggest that while Morocco can indeed be affordable for those embracing local goods and markets, maintaining a diet or lifestyle similar to one's home country, especially from Europe, might lead to higher expenses than anticipated. The video serves as a practical guide for travelers to manage their budgets effectively by understanding where to shop for different types of goods.
