All gardeners should put string in garden when they go on holiday

Heading off on holiday and worried about your beloved plants? Simon Akeroyd, a renowned gardener and author, has shared a clever DIY hack to ensure your greenery stays hydrated while you're away. The method leverages the principle of capillary action, offering a simple and affordable solution. Akeroyd's technique involves a large water container, such as a watering can, and several lengths of string. First, the string is thoroughly soaked in water. One end of each string is then tied to a small weight, like a stone, and dropped into the bottom of the water-filled container. The other end of each string is then carefully inserted into the soil of individual plant pots. As the compost in the plant pots begins to dry, the string acts as a wick, drawing water from the container directly to the plants. This continuous, slow release of moisture helps maintain optimal hydration levels, preventing plants from wilting in your absence. "This simple trick ensures your plants get the water they need," Akeroyd explains. While the hack provides a reliable watering system, Akeroyd humorously concludes, "Of course, the one thing you can guarantee in England during the holidays... is that it's bound to rain anyway." This lighthearted remark adds a touch of local charm to the universally applicable gardening tip.
