New EU Energy Label Shakes Up Smartphone Market: Who's Best, Worst, and Non-Compliant?

As of today, a new mandatory EU energy label for smartphones has come into effect, aiming to provide consumers with clearer information on device performance. This regulation requires manufacturers and retailers to display energy efficiency, battery autonomy, and drop resistance classifications for all smartphones sold in stores, on websites, and in packaging. According to an analysis conducted by SmartWorld.it, a leading Italian technology network, the implementation of this new labeling system is already revealing significant differences among various smartphone models. The analysis highlights top performers in energy efficiency, with many devices achieving the highest 'A' rating. However, the 'C' category for energy efficiency appears to be less populated. In terms of battery autonomy, measured by the number of charge cycles before capacity drops below 80%, Samsung's S25 Ultra and S25 Edge models lead the pack with 2000 cycles. Conversely, OPPO Find X8 Pro and Vivo V50 are noted at the lower end with 800 cycles. For drop resistance, several models, including Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, Honor 400 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, Google Pixel 9A, and Motorola Edge 60 Pro, achieved the highest 'A' classification. Meanwhile, OnePlus 13, OPPO Find X8 Pro, and Motorola Razr 60 Ultra were rated 'D'. While many major manufacturers have updated their official websites to include the new energy labels, some retailers are still lagging in their adoption. This new legislation is expected to incentivize companies to improve their products' environmental and durability performance to achieve higher classifications, ultimately benefiting consumers with more transparent and comparable product information.
