Kenya's Budget Cuts Hit Schools: Exam Invigilation at Risk
Kenya: School Capitation Funds Reallocated, Raising Concerns Kenya's education sector faces challenges after the government reallocated funds from school capitation. This decision, part of broader fiscal consolidation measures, has raised concerns among stakeholders. The reallocation impacts the ability of schools to finance crucial aspects of education, such as exam invigilation and supervision. "How then do we make a budget without having money to go into supervision and the invigilation of the very same exams?" questioned Dennis Aseto, a guest on SpiceFMKe's The Situation Room. Aseto highlighted the impact on students from poorer families who rely on these funds. The budget and appropriations committee of the National Assembly reduced the capitation, impacting secondary schools by 5.9 billion shillings, junior schools by 2 billion shillings, and primary schools by 900 million shillings. This reallocation is part of efforts to balance the 4.2 trillion shillings budget for the next financial year. While the government aims to balance the budget, concerns remain about the potential negative impact on education and vulnerable students.
