German politician Friedrich Merz has strongly criticized the federal government's decision to decommission the nation's last three nuclear power plants, calling it a significant strategic error. Speaking at a recent CSU event, Merz stated, "One of the gravest strategic errors of this federal government was to shut down the last three nuclear power plants we have in Germany. That was a measure of ignorance, of stupidity, of irresponsibility, and of nonsense, as one cannot surpass in such a difficult time." He further argued that this policy has directly contributed to soaring electricity and energy costs for both private households and industrial sectors across the country. In a separate interview with 'Bild,' Merz outlined the CDU's alternative approach, indicating that a future CDU-led government would immediately bring the decommissioned nuclear power plants back online. During an ARD interview, Merz clarified that while the Social Democratic Party (SPD) opposed the reactivation of the plants, the CDU had advocated for a three-month moratorium to thoroughly assess the feasibility of their continued operation. "We would have liked to have had a three-month moratorium to check whether that is still possible or not. The SPD was not prepared for that, and we had to accept that," Merz explained. This consistent messaging from Merz underscores a clear divergence in energy policy perspectives within the German political landscape, with the CDU advocating for a reconsideration of nuclear energy's role in the nation's energy mix.
