New Yorkers Face Rising Costs Under Mayor Adams: Rent, Utilities, and Food Prices Soar
New York City residents are experiencing a significant increase in their cost of living, with critics pointing to policies enacted under Mayor Eric Adams' administration. In a recent interview conducted on a New York City subway, a guest on the "SubwayTakes" series detailed several areas where expenses have climbed. According to the interviewee, Mayor Adams has overseen a 9% rent increase for approximately two million New Yorkers residing in rent-stabilized units since the start of his term. Furthermore, monthly Con-Ed utility bills have seen a $70 increase, and water bills are now $9 higher, marking the highest increase in 14 years. The discussion also highlighted challenges faced by mobile food vendors. While the city is authorized to issue up to 445 permits annually for mobile food vending, only 71 permits have been issued over the past three years. This scarcity has reportedly led to a black market for licenses, with one vendor allegedly spending $18,000 to acquire a permit. Both the host and the interviewee expressed strong dissatisfaction with the current administration's impact on affordability in the city, stating they would not support Mayor Adams for a second term.
