Penang's Hidden Gem: How a Historic Building Became a Modern Mall Landmark
Gurney Paragon Mall's Hidden History: From Novitiate to Modern Landmark Nestled within the bustling Gurney Paragon Mall in Penang, Malaysia, lies a building with a rich and fascinating history. This architectural gem, now a vibrant event venue, was originally constructed in 1925 as St. Joseph's Novitiate, a training center for aspiring educators run by the De La Salle Brothers. The video showcases the building's unique architectural details, highlighting its transformation over the decades. "This building was actually a training college for aspiring educators who would go on to serve in mission schools across Malaysia and Singapore," explains Syerleena Rashid, the video's creator and Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera, in the video. After the De La Salle Brothers departed in the early 1980s, the building served as Upland International School. However, a significant turning point occurred in 2004 when Hunza Properties acquired the property. Instead of demolition, Hunza undertook a meticulous restoration project, investing approximately 10 million ringgit, including 3.5 million just for foundation strengthening. This thoughtful preservation ensured that this historical site seamlessly integrated into the modern Gurney Paragon Mall. The result is a beautiful blend of old and new, a testament to the successful coexistence of heritage preservation and urban development. The video concludes with a celebratory tone, emphasizing the building's role as a vibrant event space that keeps the soul of Penang's past alive.
