Three French Riviera Beaches Closed for Summer Due to Water Pollution
Three beaches in the Alpes-Maritimes region of France will be closed for swimming for the entire summer due to concerns about water quality. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced the closures on May 27, 2025, affecting beaches in Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Menton. The ARS cited insufficient water quality as the reason for the closures. "These closures are necessary to protect public health," said an ARS spokesperson. The agency is conducting weekly water quality tests to monitor the situation and will reopen the beaches as soon as the water quality improves. In Saint-Laurent-du-Var, the Cousteau and Landsberg beaches are closed due to chronic water pollution. However, the town has managed to reopen two other previously closed beaches, Goélands and Flots bleus, indicating progress in environmental management. In Menton, the Gorbio beach is closed due to persistent contamination. Despite these closures, the ARS is maintaining constant surveillance of water quality throughout the summer to ensure the safety of beachgoers. This proactive approach demonstrates a commitment to public health and environmental protection.
