Dubai Jail's Farming Initiative: Inmates Cultivate Hope and Revenue
Dubai Jail's Farming Program Yields Success and Hope Dubai, UAE – In a remarkable initiative, Dubai Central Jail has launched a program that teaches inmates farming techniques. This program has proven remarkably successful, producing tons of cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes since its launch in 2024. The project has not only provided inmates with valuable skills but has also generated Dh900,000 ($245,000) in revenue from the sale of produce. "This project has helped me get through the time. It's been a long time," said one British inmate serving an eight-year sentence for cocaine possession, highlighting the positive impact of the program on his well-being. The revenue generated will be given to the prisoners as a gift when they leave to help them start a new life or business. Colonel Mohammed Al Obeidli of Dubai Police, overseeing the project, stated that "All income generated through this project, we will give to the prisoners as a gift when they go outside to start a new life or to start a new business." The project employs 42 people daily and includes a smaller farm at the women's jail. The initiative demonstrates a commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration, offering inmates a sense of purpose and a brighter future.
