Cairo Artisan's Dream: Weaving a Legacy into the Kaaba's Kiswa
In the heart of Cairo, Egypt, resides Ahmed Shawky, a master of the ancient art of qasab embroidery. For five decades, he has dedicated his life to this intricate craft, a tradition passed down through his family for over three centuries. His grandfather oversaw the creation of the Kaaba's Kiswa from 1924 to 1926, and Shawky's father also participated in this sacred task. "I dream of making the Kaaba's Kiswa just like my grandfather once did," Shawky shares in the video, expressing his profound connection to this heritage. The video shows the meticulous process, using raw silver wire threads that are precisely measured to fit the Kiswa's dimensions. "I didn't just love this craft—I fell in love with it passionately," he says, emphasizing his deep devotion. Shawky's story is a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the dedication of artisans who keep ancient crafts alive, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of Egypt and the Muslim world.
