Hidden Epidemic: Thousands of Brits Unaware They Have Coeliac Disease
Coeliac Awareness Month Highlights Undiagnosed Cases in the UK The UK is currently observing Coeliac Awareness Month, and a recent segment on This Morning shed light on the significant number of undiagnosed cases of coeliac disease. According to gluten-free chef Becky Excell, approximately 1 in 100 people in the UK have the condition, but only 36% are aware of their diagnosis. Excell emphasized that symptoms extend beyond typical gastrointestinal issues, stating, "Symptoms aren't just gut-related. It can be like recurrent miscarriage, neurological things, extreme fatigue—tons of things you wouldn't necessarily think of." This underscores the challenge in identifying the condition. Coeliac UK is actively campaigning to increase awareness and encourage testing, aiming to reach the 64% of the population who remain undiagnosed. The charity's efforts highlight the importance of early detection and management of coeliac disease to prevent long-term health complications.
