COVID-19 Surge in Thailand: Schools Reopen Amidst Rising Infections
COVID-19 Cases Surge in Thailand, School Reopenings Raise Concerns Thailand is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, with infections exceeding 210,000, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). This increase follows the Songkran festival holiday. The DDC spokesperson, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, expressed concern about the potential for increased transmission with the reopening of schools. "The situation is worsening," Dr. Karnkawinpong stated. "We are particularly concerned about the increased risk to children and the potential for outbreaks in schools." The highest number of cases are reported in tourist provinces such as Rayong, Bangkok, Chonburi, Phuket, Nonthaburi, and Pathum Thani. The majority of deaths (78%) are among those aged 60 and older, many with pre-existing conditions. Cluster outbreaks have been reported in schools and other institutions. The DDC is urging preventative measures and increased vigilance to mitigate the spread of the virus.
