Community-Driven Security Initiative Launched in Kenya
Kenya Launches New Security Initiative Targeting Informal Settlements Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya Alliance of Resident Associations (KARA) has launched a new security initiative aimed at improving safety and security in informal settlements across the country. KARA CEO Henry Ochienge, in a recent interview, outlined the initiative's key goals and strategies. The initiative focuses on community engagement, emphasizing the principle that "Security starts with you." Ochienge stressed the importance of collaboration with local government and the national police service, stating, "Using the office that we have, the Ngao office, you have our full support." The initiative specifically targets issues such as drug abuse and other common crimes in informal settlements. Ochienge acknowledged the challenges, particularly the high number of informal settlements in Nairobi, but expressed confidence in the initiative's ability to make a difference. He highlighted partnerships with county governments and the police to address these issues, one by one. The regional commissioner's support was also mentioned. Ochienge's commitment to improving security is evident in his words: "I want that next time we meet here, Nairobi will be the best managed in terms of security." This initiative represents a significant step towards creating safer and more secure communities in Kenya's informal settlements.
