Kazakhstan Universities Set Own Entrance Exam Scores
Kazakhstan Universities Set Own Passing Scores: Minister Explains Why Kazakhstan's Minister of Science and Higher Education, Sayasat Nurbek, recently explained why many universities in the country independently determine their passing scores. This practice, he stated, is partly due to infrastructure limitations and the intense competition for places, especially in fields like education. "Many universities are facing significant infrastructure deficits," Nurbek said in an interview. "To manage the large number of applicants, they often set higher passing scores." He cited Suleiman Demirel University as an example, noting its exceptionally high competition rate. The minister emphasized that while universities have the right to set their own scores within the framework of academic freedom, a minimum overall score is still set by the Ministry. This clarification addresses concerns about fairness and transparency in the Kazakhstani higher education admissions process. The Minister's comments highlight the challenges faced by universities and the need for further investment in infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of students.
