Mexico Shifts School Calendar: Later Start, More Summer Vacation
Mexico Adjusts School Calendar for 2025-2026: Later Start, Longer Summer Break Mexico City – The Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) has announced changes to the 2025-2026 school calendar, impacting millions of students and teachers nationwide. The most significant change is the delayed start of the school year, now beginning on September 1st instead of the traditional last Monday in August. This adjustment also extends the summer vacation period to July 16th to August 31st, providing an additional week of break. "These adjustments seek a balance between education and the well-being of students and teachers," stated an SEP spokesperson in a recent video announcement. The video, widely circulated on social media, shows images of students and teachers, emphasizing the impact of the changes. The modifications apply to all levels of basic education—preschool, primary, and secondary—in both public and private schools. While students will have 185 days of classes, teachers will have a slightly reduced workload with 190 teaching days. Winter break remains from December 22nd to January 9th, and Easter break from March 30th to April 10th. The SEP also plans technical school workshops on the last Friday of each month and intensive workshops from January 7th to 9th. Parents and educators are encouraged to consult the official calendar for detailed information and to plan accordingly. This adjustment reflects the SEP's commitment to improving the educational experience and promoting the well-being of all involved in the Mexican education system.
