Panama Cracks Down on Businesses Polluting Azuero Rivers
Panama Takes Action Against River Pollution in Azuero Azuero Peninsula, Panama – President José Raúl Mulino has announced a strong crackdown on companies polluting the La Villa and Estibaná rivers. Decades of negligence by businesses have resulted in severe contamination, impacting water quality and public health. "This is criminal, honestly," stated President Mulino during a recent press conference. The government has initiated legal proceedings and imposed fines of up to \$10,000 on those responsible. Inspections have identified 23 critical contamination points, 11 of which are already under administrative investigation. As a result of the contamination, the Roberto Reina water treatment plant has reduced production by 25%, from 75% to 50% capacity, impacting water supply in areas like Chitré. The government is working to resolve the crisis and ensure the safety of the public water supply. The situation highlights the need for stricter environmental regulations and corporate accountability in protecting Panama's natural resources.
