Panamanian Researchers Use Geospatial Data to Tackle Urban Growth and Disease
Panamanian researchers are making strides in utilizing geospatial data to address crucial challenges in urban planning and public health. A recent TVN Noticias report highlighted twelve innovative projects, one of which focuses on analyzing Panama City's urban growth. Researcher Fabio Reinoso Vilca noted the city's expansion towards the Northwest, while Colon grows towards the Southeast. Another project by the Gorgas Institute used geospatial mapping to identify hantavirus hotspots, revealing a higher concentration in rice paddies compared to other areas. "We are quantifying in meters how much the city is expanding," explained Reinoso Vilca, emphasizing the use of data to inform urban planning. The Gorgas Institute's research offers valuable insights into disease control, potentially saving lives and resources. This collaborative effort showcases Panama's commitment to innovation and data-driven solutions for a better future.
