Sarawak's Strategic Move: Thousands of Kilometers of Roads to Get Maintenance Funding
Sarawak Government Registers Former Logging Roads Under MARRIS for Maintenance Funding The Sarawak state government has taken a significant step towards improving its infrastructure by registering thousands of kilometers of former logging roads under the Malaysia Road Record Information System (MARRIS). This move, announced by Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, will allow for the allocation of government funds for the maintenance of these crucial roadways. "The registration of these former logging roads under MARRIS is a strategic move to ensure their upkeep and improve connectivity," Datuk Lariwoo stated during a press conference. The initiative covers a total of 5,297 kilometers of roads, many of which connect rural areas to urban centers. Of this total, 3,293 kilometers represent still-active logging roads, while 2,004 kilometers are no longer in active use. The government's proactive approach ensures that even inactive roads are maintained, preventing deterioration and enhancing overall infrastructure. The funding allocated for these roads will be subject to guidelines set by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). This ensures transparency and accountability in the use of public funds for infrastructure maintenance. This initiative underscores the Sarawak government's commitment to improving its infrastructure and ensuring seamless connectivity throughout the state, benefiting both local communities and the economy.
