Kazakhstan Parliament Debates Headscarf Ban in Schools
The debate in Kazakhstan's parliament over the expulsion of girls wearing headscarves from school is intensifying. Aigul Kuspan, a Member of Parliament, argues that the issue is best resolved through Ministry of Education directives, stating, "This is resolved through the Ministry of Education's order. We have such an order." However, Abzal Kuspan, another MP, emphasizes that the current law does not permit such expulsions. He highlights the role of individual school regulations, saying, "But the current law on education indicates that each school has its internal regulations, and students and parents must abide by them." This conflict underscores the complexities of balancing religious freedom with school regulations in Kazakhstan. Last year's Supreme Court ruling against such exclusions adds another layer to this ongoing discussion. The debate continues, highlighting the need for clear guidelines respecting both religious rights and school rules.
