Fake Immigration Lawyers Defraud Immigrants: Victims Share Harrowing Stories

In Homestead, Florida, a growing number of immigrants are falling victim to sophisticated scams perpetrated by fake immigration lawyers. Two victims, Isabel and José, shared their harrowing experiences with Univision Noticias. Isabel recounted how she was contacted by imposters posing as lawyers on social media. "I trusted them because of my desperate situation," she explained. They conducted virtual consultations from what appeared to be legitimate government offices. José, a Honduran immigrant, had a similar experience, being interviewed virtually by someone posing as a judge. Both victims lost thousands of dollars. The fraudulent lawyers promised them permanent residency, but delivered nothing. While Isabel reported the fraud to the police, she is still awaiting a response three months later. This case highlights the vulnerability of undocumented immigrants and underscores the need for increased awareness and caution.
