Bolivia's "Little Mexico": Drug Trafficking Investigation After Police Ambush
In northern Potosí, Bolivia, a region known locally as "Little Mexico," a recent ambush that killed three police officers has brought renewed focus on the area's suspected links to drug trafficking. The incident occurred during ongoing protests and roadblocks demanding the reinstatement of Evo Morales as a presidential candidate. General Augusto Russo, Commander of the Bolivian National Police, stated, "This is an area where we have information about marijuana plantations and cocaine factories." The government, through the FELCN (Fuerza Especial de Lucha Contra el Narcotráfico), has launched an investigation into the area's alleged involvement in drug production. Senator Santos Ramos added that irregular groups control the region, often heavily armed. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges Bolivia faces in combating drug trafficking and maintaining security in remote areas. The FELCN's intervention aims to disrupt these operations and ensure the safety of citizens.
