Bolivia's Credit Rating Drops Amid Economic Challenges and Political Tensions

Standard & Poor's has announced a downgrade of Bolivia's long-term credit rating from CCC+ to CCC-, citing several economic and political concerns. The rating agency highlighted the country's elevated external commercial debt payments and limited access to international bond markets as primary factors. Furthermore, S&P noted the impact of political disputes, particularly in the context of upcoming elections, and the widening gap in the parallel exchange rate, alongside persistent inflation. These factors contribute to a challenging economic outlook for Bolivia, with potential difficulties in meeting its financial obligations, especially from 2026 onwards. The agency also issued a warning that Bolivia's rating could face further downgrades within the next six to twelve months if risks related to debt payment increase.
