SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – Merchants in Santa Cruz are expressing growing concern over the persistent scarcity of cooking oil in local markets, a situation they describe as far from normal. According to vendors, the distribution of essential cooking oil remains severely limited, with many stalls receiving only minimal quantities, such as six bottles per delivery. One merchant interviewed by UNITEL BOLIVIA stated, "They are leaving us six bottles per stall. It arrives after a week, or even a month for the finer oil." She added that other types of oil arrive after one or two weeks, indicating a lack of control over supply. The limited supply has led to rationing by some vendors. "We take two packets because there are people who truly need it and are buying it," the merchant explained. She also noted that bulk oil is now rarely consumed by the public following past controversies. Regarding prices, a 1-liter bottle of oil is currently priced between 18 and 20 Bolivianos, depending on the brand. A 5-liter bottle is approximately 90 Bolivianos, with the final price depending on the merchant's profit margin. The merchants emphasized that the quantity of oil reaching the markets is minimal, leading to widespread concern among both sellers and consumers.
