La Paz, Bolivia – A session in the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies concerning new lithium contracts erupted into tension today, as civic groups and a deputy demanded the suspension of the debate. Deputy Lissa Claros, accompanied by members of the Civic Committee of Potosí (COMICIPO), entered the hemicycle, leading to police intervention.Protesters voiced strong opposition to the contracts, arguing for their suspension. Claros stated, 'We recall that a popular action has been filed, and this popular action is currently under review in the Constitutional Tribunal. What happens if the Constitutional Tribunal rules that these treatments cannot be done? What do we do if today a result emerges? What cannot be done is to force a treatment that is illegal and unconstitutional, from a bill that is observed, that lacks legitimacy, that lacks a prior consultation that should have been done with indigenous original peoples, and at this moment it is in judicial instances.'The police commander, Cnl. Erick Revollo, indicated that the civic groups did not have authorization to enter the hemicycle. 'We are complying with the norm. I cannot do otherwise,' Revollo stated, adding that those unauthorized would need to go to the designated floor for authorized activities. Police were deployed to prevent further conflicts.The debate on the lithium contracts remains ongoing, with preliminary motions and discussions continuing despite the disruptions.
