Bolivia is grappling with a severe diesel shortage, leading to widespread disruptions in transportation and significant economic hardship for truck and bus drivers. In cities like Santa Cruz and El Alto, drivers are enduring waits of up to three days and nights at fuel stations, causing immense frustration and financial losses. Drivers interviewed expressed their exasperation with the prolonged delays. One truck driver in Santa Cruz, Alberto Camacho, stated, "We've been sleeping all night. There's no food here. We don't know when the diesel situation will change." Another driver highlighted the necessity of diesel for transporting vital goods. "We need to carry about 900 liters to go to La Paz and back," he explained, emphasizing the critical role of diesel in their operations, particularly for transporting grain and soybeans for companies. The scarcity is not only causing inconvenience but also significant economic setbacks. Drivers report abandoning their families for days and incurring substantial financial losses due to the inability to work. "We are losing out because we leave our families abandoned, and we have to stop and wait. It's extremely complicated; I don't know where we're going to end up," a driver heading to Tarija lamented. The situation, described as "sad" by some, underscores a nationwide challenge that continues to impact the livelihoods of many and the country's supply chain.
