Naval Academy Plebes Conquer Greased Pole in Epic 2.5-Hour Climb
ANNAPOLIS, MD – In a display of teamwork and perseverance, the U.S. Naval Academy's Class of 2029 successfully completed the annual Herndon Monument climb on May 14th. The 21-foot monument, coated in lard, presented a significant challenge, but after approximately two and a half hours of determined effort, a plebe reached the top. "It was the hardest thing I've ever done," said one participating plebe, who wished to remain anonymous. The tradition marks the official end of the freshmen's plebe year and their transition to upperclassmen. The event was witnessed by a large and enthusiastic crowd, adding to the excitement and celebratory atmosphere. The successful climb concluded with the replacement of the traditional "dixie cup" atop the monument with an upperclassman's hat, symbolizing the successful completion of the challenge and the start of a new chapter in the lives of the academy's newest upperclassmen.
