Minnesota Lawmaker Killed in Targeted Political Shooting
Minnesota Lawmaker Killed in Brooklyn Park Shooting; Suspect Still at Large A tragic shooting incident in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, has claimed the life of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. The incident occurred on the evening of June 14th, 2025, when a suspect, posing as a police officer, opened fire on the Hortmans' home. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also targeted in what authorities are calling a targeted act of political violence. Both are expected to recover. Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley addressed the media, stating, "There was a police vehicle in the driveway with the lights, emergency lights on, and what appeared to be a police officer at the door, coming out of the house. When our officers confronted them, the individual immediately fired upon the officers who exchanged gunfire and the suspect retreated back into the home." Chief Bruley also issued a warning to residents: "If somebody comes to the door and they knock on the door and is claiming to be a police officer, please do a couple of things. One, call 911 and confirm that the officer belongs there. Also, we've informed all our officers in Brooklyn Park that they are not to approach anybody by themselves. They are to approach in pairs." Governor Tim Walz condemned the violence, calling it "an act of targeted political violence." He stated, "Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy. We don't settle our differences with violence or at gunpoint." The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect remains at large.
