An American expat living in Serbia has shared her insights into the significant cultural differences she has encountered since relocating. The woman, originally from New York, highlighted three key areas that stood out to her: the prevalence of smoking, the unique cafe culture, and the strict adherence to pedestrian laws. "Smoking is definitely number one," she stated, noting the stark contrast to American regulations where designated smoking areas are common. "Here, you can smoke in restaurants, in cafes, in a park, or at the bus stop. It's just like everywhere you look, someone is smoking." Another notable difference, according to the expat, is the cafe culture. She explained that Serbian cafes prioritize social interaction over the product itself. "It's about sitting down with friends and family, slowing down, enjoying your time with other people," she described, contrasting it with the more product-focused cafe scene in America. Finally, she addressed the surprising absence of jaywalking. Despite living in Novi Sad, where she says people are stricter about adhering to stop lights, she appreciates the order. "Here, there'll be no cars, the crosswalk light will have like 30 seconds left, and people will just wait," she observed. "I kinda like that because I for some reason have anxiety when it comes to crossing the street. So I like that I can just, you know, sit and wait and be with my thoughts for 30 seconds before I cross the street and I don't have to worry about getting hit by cars that way."
