Gardeners Advised on Crucial Winter Tree Protection Through Whitewashing Kyiv, Ukraine – As winter approaches, gardeners are reminded of the vital practice of whitewashing fruit trees, a method often misunderstood as purely aesthetic. Expert gardener VasilyevnaOlesya recently highlighted the critical protective benefits of this traditional technique in a widely viewed online video. She clarified that whitewashing is not merely for beauty but serves as a robust defense against harsh winter conditions and pests. "Many people think whitewashing is just for looks, or that 'no one in Europe does it'," Olesya stated. "But in reality, it's about protecting trees from frost and sun scald." She explained that significant temperature swings, common during winter days and nights, can cause tree bark to crack, leading to "frost cracks." These fissures then become vulnerable entry points for fungal diseases and provide overwintering spots for various pests. Olesya detailed her approach, focusing specifically on the trunk and lower branches. "I only whitewash the trunk and lower branches because that's where the tree suffers most from temperature changes and where pests hibernate," she noted. She likened the whitewash to a "quilt" that covers the base of the tree, also deterring rodents like hares from gnawing on the bark. For those looking to implement this protective measure, Olesya shared her proven recipe: 2 kg of slaked lime, 300 g of copper sulfate, 100 g of PVA glue, and 10 liters of water. She advised mixing these ingredients thoroughly and applying the solution after the autumn garden treatment, once leaves have fallen and trees are dormant. Optimal application conditions include a dry, sunny day with temperatures between +5°C and +10°C, ensuring the bark is clean and disinfected for better adhesion and longevity of the whitewash.
