Kyiv, Ukraine – A local gardening enthusiast, known online as VasilyevnaOlesya, recently shared her proven method for planting winter garlic, offering valuable insights for home gardeners across Ukraine. The detailed process, uploaded on November 4, 2025, emphasizes soil preparation and specific nutrient application to ensure a robust harvest. According to VasilyevnaOlesya, the initial step involves thoroughly loosening the soil to enhance oxygenation, a critical factor for healthy root development. She then applies a carefully prepared mixture of superphosphate and a soil improver, such as "Argumin," directly into the planting rows. "This combination provides essential phosphorus for strong root growth and significantly boosts the fertility of heavy black soil," she explained in her video. Further enriching the soil, wood ash is added, serving as a natural source of potassium and vital micronutrients. "Garlic absolutely loves these elements," VasilyevnaOlesya noted. To mitigate the challenges of dense black soil and prevent clove rot, a layer of sand is spread over the prepared rows before planting. "The sand lightens the soil, prevents rotting, and helps the cloves sprout more easily," she elaborated. The garlic cloves are then carefully placed on this sand layer and covered with soil. VasilyevnaOlesya concluded by stating her intention to mulch the planted garlic with walnut leaves before the first light frosts, a practice believed to protect the crop during winter. This method, she asserts, is key to achieving a successful and abundant garlic yield.
