Former Romanian PM Accuses Government of "Organized Robbery" Through Energy VAT Hike

Former Romanian Prime Minister Alleges Government Misconduct Over Energy Bills BUCHAREST, Romania – Former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has publicly accused the current government of engaging in a deliberate scheme to increase the Value Added Tax (VAT) on energy bills, with the proceeds allegedly funneled to political parties. In a recent statement, Ponta asserted that the significant rise in August energy bills is not due to errors by energy companies, but rather a direct consequence of a government-implemented law that increased VAT to 21% from August 1st. Ponta, known for his critical stance on current political affairs, described the situation as an "organized robbery" by the "new power," a coalition he characterizes as a mix of long-standing leaders and those seeking revenge. He specifically highlighted that the increased VAT funds do not remain with energy companies but are directed to the state budget, from which, he claims, they are then distributed to political parties such as PSD, PNL, UDMR, and USR, and even to the opposition. "They increased the VAT, and they collect the money," Ponta stated, emphasizing that these funds are used for "their businesses and their interests." He further criticized the government for what he perceives as a pattern of deception, drawing parallels to past unfulfilled promises regarding pension increases and other projects. Ponta urged citizens to understand that the energy companies are not at fault, but rather those who enacted the legislation. He concluded by expressing his inability to tolerate the ongoing deceit, promising to continue exposing what he knows to the public. The accusations come amidst public concern over rising living costs and energy prices in Romania. The government has yet to issue a direct response to Ponta's specific claims regarding the alleged diversion of VAT funds to political parties.
