Former Death Row Inmate Dies in Tragic Galway House Fire
A house fire in Connemara, County Galway, has tragically claimed the lives of two people. One of the victims has been identified as Sunny Jacobs, a former American death row inmate who spent years fighting wrongful conviction for murder before being exonerated. The incident occurred around 6:20 AM on June 3, 2025, and the scene was quickly secured by Gardaí and the Galway Fire and Rescue Service. Maxine Bramley, a Midwestern reporter for Virgin Media News, reported from the scene, stating, "The scene has been preserved, and Gardaí are here making door-to-door inquiries today." Gerry O'Malley, Chief Fire Officer of Galway County Council, provided details of the fire response: "We mobilized two crews...one from Carraroe and one from Galway City. As soon as we got here, we mobilized a breathing apparatus team who went into the building on a fire fighting search and rescue mission." The bodies of Ms. Jacobs and a younger man were recovered and transported to University Hospital Galway for post-mortem examinations. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Clifton Garda Station or the Garda Confidential Line. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. This tragic event highlights the importance of fire safety and the ongoing need for community support in times of crisis.
