Spain's New Anti-Smoking Law: Where You Can and Cannot Light Up
Spain's New Anti-Tobacco Law: Stricter Regulations on Smoking in Public Spaces Spain is set to introduce a stricter anti-tobacco law by the end of 2025. The proposed legislation will significantly restrict smoking in public areas, impacting smokers and businesses alike. The new law aims to protect public health by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. Key changes include a ban on smoking on terraces of bars and restaurants, even outdoors. Other prohibited areas include bus stops, university campuses, schoolyards, and outdoor events. The ban also extends to e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. "If this law passes as is, you'll forget about smoking almost anywhere," explains Xavi Abat, a lawyer who discusses the proposed law in a recent video. "It's no joke." While the law is still in draft form, the government intends to finalize it by the end of 2025. Penalties for violations are expected to start at €30. The law is expected to face opposition from smokers and businesses but is supported by public health advocates. The final version of the law will determine the exact details and enforcement mechanisms.
