MINSK, Belarus – A Minsk resident has issued a direct appeal to President Alexander Lukashenko, highlighting the critical issue of housing availability for large families in the capital. The woman, who currently resides in a 20-square-meter dormitory with her one-year-old and four-month-old child, stated that despite having a young child, her family has not been offered housing. According to the resident, large families in Minsk are currently being offered housing only after a waiting period of three to eight years. "Here's the answer why people don't want to have children. Housing for large families is offered for money in three, or even eight years, but where to raise children?" she questioned in her video address. She emphasized that this prolonged waiting period significantly contributes to the declining birth rate in the country. The woman proposed a radical solution to stimulate population growth: "My proposal is to bring keys to the maternity hospital when a mother is discharged with her third child. Then the birth rate will increase." She expressed confidence that such a legislative change would swiftly resolve the demographic challenge. The video has garnered significant attention online, sparking widespread discussion among Belarusian citizens regarding social support for families.
